While you wait
Five things worth
knowing in advance.
The best time to find your shut-off valves is any day other than today. Two minutes with this list can save you thousands in water damage.
- Main water shut-off: usually where the line enters the house — basement wall, crawl space, or near the water meter. Turn clockwise.
- Water heater: the cold-water valve on top stops a leaking tank from refilling itself.
- Furnace switch: looks like a light switch on or near the unit. Flip it off if you hear grinding or smell burning.
- Breaker panel: if water is anywhere near electrical, kill the affected circuits before touching anything.
- Gas: don't touch the meter valve yourself — leave the house and make the calls from outside.
After-hours pricing, in writing
Emergencies aren't
a payday for us.
Some outfits triple their rates after 5pm. We charge one after-hours diagnostic fee, credit it toward the repair, and quote the fix from the same flat-rate book we use at noon on a Tuesday.
